Eye Movement Desensitization and reprocessing

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a form of psychotherapy that allows people to heal from symptoms and emotional distress related to a distressing life event or trauma. Studies have shown that the mind can heal from psychological trauma just as much as the body can heal from physical trauma.

According to The EMDR Institute, Inc. “EMDR therapy involves attention to three time periods: the past, present, and future. Focus is given to past disturbing memories and related events. Also, it is given to current situations that cause distress, and to developing the skills and attitudes needed for positive future actions. With EMDR therapy, these items are addressed using an eight-phase treatment approach.”

The 8 phases of EMDR are history and treatment planning, preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, body scan, closure, and reevaluation.
